EDP1201 Development and Teaching for Learning

DESCRIPTION:
The unit provides an introduction to the principles and practices of effective teaching based on a foundation of child development and theories of learning. Practical field experiences will be provided for making connections between theory and practice, developing skills of observation, and planning, teaching and evaluating lessons. The model of the teacher as a reflective autonomous educator will be developed further in the unit.

   
 

ITL1100 Information Technology and Teaching

DESCRIPTION:
This unit will encourage students to develop understandings and beliefs about students, teachers, schools and the use of information technology in education. This will be achieved by considering schooling in Western Australia; the nature of both teaching and learning; the personal information technology needs of the student at university; and the potential for the use of computer technology in K-12 teaching and learning. By the end of the unit students will have a fundamental knowledge of the schooling system; the essentials of teaching and learning; library systems (including the Internet); applications software; multimedia software; and the use of computers in schools.

 

 

 

SCE2111 Inquiry Learning in Science

DESCRIPTION:
This unit considers the purpose and value of science education, develops an understanding of the material-centred inquiry approach of science, and develops teaching strategies for implementing activities from a range of curriculum materials.

   
 

LAN1100 Language Learning Theories

DESCRIPTION:
Students will examine ways in which language is constructed and developed in a range of cultural and social contexts through exploration of language learning theories and reflection upon their own and children's use of oral language. On the basis of their understanding students will observe, plan, implement and evaluate a variety of oral language learning activities in a range of contexts.

   
 

EDP1101 Reflecting on Teaching and Learning

DESCRIPTION:
The unit will encourage students to begin inquiring into their understanding and beliefs about students, teachers and schools.  In the course of inquiry students will be introduced to some relevant theoretical orientations that underpin teaching and learning and the sociology of schools.  The model of the teacher as a reflective, autonomous educator will be introduced in the unit.

   
 

DSE1100 Drama as a Process for Learning

DESCRIPTION:
An introduction to the teaching of Drama in Early Childhood settings within an outcomes approach to Arts Education. The unit covers drama as an expressive process and aims to develop structures that support young children learning within a dramatic framework.

   
 

EDP2102 Motivating and Managing Learners

DESCRIPTION:
This unit investigates various theoretical positions regarding learning, motivation and management in relation to the social processes which prevail in primary and middle schools and classrooms. The development of positive social relationships through effective management and motivation of children of these age groups will be a key focus. Detailed attention will be given to processes of effective classroom management and their application to problem situations in these school settings.

   
 

PSY1101 Introduction to Psychology

DESCRIPTION:
This unit provides an introduction to psychology and to the role of scientific method. It equips students with a basic understanding of the subject matter of psychology by examining the biological bases of behaviour including consciousness, sensation and perception; learning and cognition including memory, thinking, and language; emotion and motivation; personality and individual differences; psychological health and well-being; and psychological disorders.

   
 

LAN2200 Literacy Development

DESCRIPTION:
This unit develops from the understandings of LAN1100 to explore a range of models of literacy learning in order to assist students to develop and justify their own understanding of how to support the effective literacy development of all children. A range of texts (literary, drama and media) will be investigated, with emphasis on children¡¯s literature as both model and resource.

   
 

AED1100 Developing Creativity in the Classroom

DESCRIPTION:
This unit addresses the role of the visual arts at the primary level to provide educational experiences in the use of visual forms and images as a means for personal expression and communication. The unit will develop an understanding that the visual arts offer unique ways of expressing and interpreting ideas and feelings. These experiences will include activities such as drawing, painting, print making, sculpture, design and assemblage. Each of these studio areas produces uniquely different results in terms of visual qualities, form and appearance. In the studio workshop sessions, the students will be directed to develop their observation skills and imagination using simple materials and processes. Appropriate visual arts teaching methods will be examined. A range of visual works will be viewed so that students will learn to recognise different styles, meanings and other functions of these works, from past and present contexts.

   
 

SSE2110 Inquiry Learning in Social Studies

DESCRIPTION:
SSE 2110 is the core curriculum studies unit for teaching in the Society and Environment Learning Area in primary schools in Western Australia.

This unit investigates the nature and scope of the Society and Environment Learning Area within the context of the WA Curriculum Framework; analyses the structure, content and use of the Western Australian Social Studies K-10 Syllabus materials; examines inquiry-orientated teaching strategies and learning activities for developing conceptual understandings, processes and skills, and core values underpinning the active citizenship outcome; identifies a range of Society and Environment teaching and learning resources; examines techniques for monitoring and reporting the level of achievement of outcomes; and introduces a model for long-term planning within an outcomes-based curriculum.

   
 

LAN2300 Curriculum Development in Language

DESCRIPTION:
This unit further explores students' understandings about the relationship between assessment, planning, teaching, evaluation and reflection. As part of this exploration students will look at the specific needs of children from a range of backgrounds and different levels of attainment.

   
 

EDP4110 The Classroom and Beyond

DESCRIPTION:
The first section or module of the unit considers strategies for developing a more detailed understanding of school characteristics. Within this module the concept of a situational/analysis is considered. The second module of the unit provides guidelines for developing both a teaching philosophy and a teaching portfolio. The former is incorporated in the latter, while the development of a portfolio provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate the qualities, which you posses as a teacher. Attention is also given in this unit to developing further understanding of student management practices. Students are provided with the opportunity to discuss and observe aspects of classroom management, and consider the applicability of these practices in their own classroom. The final module gives detailed consideration to those influences beyond the classroom, which can impact on teachers¡¯ work and working conditions.

   
 

EDP3101 Students with Special Educational Needs in the Primary Classroom

DESCRIPTION:
The main focus of the unit is on the education of students with disabilities and learning difficulties in the regular classroom.  The aim is to develop pre-service teacher awareness of the needs and assessment of students with intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional and/or behavioural disabilities or learning difficulties and those who may be gifted or talented.  A second aim is to give pre-service teachers an opportunity to develop strategies for meeting the diverse needs of these students within the regular class.  National and state policies in the area on the education of students with disabilities will also be examined.

   
 

SAN1103 Social Influences on Learning

DESCRIPTION:
This unit focuses on the social context of education, beginning with the different family forms in which children learn about the society in which they live. The unit addresses the influences of socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity and Aboriginality on opportunities to take part in education. Key issues include the distribution of educational disadvantage and disadvantage across generations and social groups; gender equality; ethnic diversity; the consequences of Aboriginal policies on Indigenous Australians; and the growing presence of non-government schooling in Australia. The unit introduces students to the fundamental elements of social research and the sociological analysis of contemporary societies.
